THE PERFORMANCE OF PHYSIOTHERAPY IN PALLIATIVE CARE: LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract
Introduction: Palliative care is active and thorough healthcare delivered to patients suffering from severe, progressive, life-threatening illnesses and must be carried out on an ongoing basis. In this context, the role of physiotherapy is important to promote comfort measures as well as the maintenance of functional conditions. Objective: To demonstrate the role of physiotherapy in palliative care. Method: A literature review article was written by searching databases such as BIREME, PubMed/Medline, SCIELO, and CAPES journals, using the following keywords: physiotherapy and palliative in both Portuguese and English. The inclusion criteria were indexed articles from 2017 to 2022 that addressed the role/rehabilitation/comfort measures of physiotherapy, were included individuals aged 18 to 99 years, all genders, clinical cases, experiments, case reports, and abstracts. The exclusion criteria: duplicate articles were included, literature reviews, nursing care, clinical and/or medicinal treatments, telemedicine-based rehabilitation, studies involving children, guidelines, consensus, protocols, guidelines, and animal’s trials. Results: A total of 734 articles were found in the four databases, and two articles were selected, with an emphasis on manual lymphatic drainage and massage therapy in palliative care. Conclusions: The integration of physiotherapy into the interdisciplinary team in palliative care has shown promising effects in terms of lowering lymphedema and relieving pain symptoms when using manual lymphatic drainage and massage therapy techniques. However, the most suggested method in these situations is massage therapy for palliative patients, which has shown increases in quality of life.
